Research and Projects

The Operations Research field has its origins decades ago by early attempts to implement scientific approaches in the management of organizations having to deal with different problems such as:

  • Manufacturing: optimization, distribution, supply chain management.
  • Transportation, infrastructure and logistics.
  • Energy, power systems, cost/benefit generation.
  • Construction: eficiente use of materials and man-hours.
  • Telecommunications: networks, radars, “bundling“.
  • Planning and Production Control: the planning of production and manufacturing modules in a company or industry.
  • Finance: financial return, risk analysis.
  • Health: allocation of scarce resources, control of diseases such as dengue fever and other infectious diseases.
  • Military sector: the need to allocate scarce resources to various military operations and internal activities of each operation.
  • Layout: analysis of the relative position of the departments, sections or offices within the set of a factory, workshop or manual desktop besides intellectual or within each department or section.

The Group of Operations Research (Operations Research) at the University of Brasilia has dealt with different projects involving the fields mentioned above. The following projects already undertaken in these fields, among other ones, can be highlighted:

  • Models of derivatives for risk analysis of transmission lines financing.
  • Financial models to determine “triggering times” (best time to invest) and the return on investment in Transmission lines.
  • Public Private Partnerships (PPP) in the transportation systems and, the dynamic control of traffic congestion.
  • Risk analysis of the financing of new infrastructure projects in the transport system.
  • E-Commerce and Business to Business (B2B): effects of E-Commerce applications in the logistics sector.
